Damaged wheel puts Reed out of 2010 Monster Energy AMA Supercross opener

After a successful lead-up to the 2010 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series Australia’s Supercross Champion Chad Reed has experienced a horror opening event at Anaheim’s Angel Stadium with a broken front wheel forcing him to the sidelines on the first lap of the Main Event.

Reed, who was third in his heat and happy with the way his Monster Energy Kawasaki  KX450F was responding to changes throughout the day was attempting a pass on Austin Stroupe for fifth place when the Suzuki rider made contact with his front wheel.

With several of the front wheel spokes completely broken Reed had no choice but to retire from the race and hand over his damaged factory Kawasaki to his mechanic.

Reed immediately expressed his short lived disappointment with the way his season had started to the race commentary team whilst vowing to return to the podium next week.

“This was not the way I had planned to start 2010,” Reed said. “I missed the start but was up into sixth and trying to make something happen when Austin Stroupe turned into me.

“It was a pretty big hit, his footpeg ended up in my front wheel and sheared the spokes out of it. From that moment there was nothing I could do to continue racing, the bike was unrideable and no longer safe.

“The critics will see a round DNF as a massive blow to my championship but it won’t be. Remember this is a long championship where anything can happen and everyone will have a bad week. I will just stick to my simple plan which is to win races and let the championship come,” Reed stated.

Reed will immediately begin preparing for the second round of the series which will be held at Chase Field in Phoenix on Saturday 16 January.

Chad Reed’s quest for a third premier class AMA Supercross title begins this weekend at the 2010 season opener, Anaheim 1 at Angel Stadium in California.

The Monster Energy Kawasaki rider, fresh from his second Super X championship win, has spent the past few weeks testing the KX450F racebike he will campaign in the 16-round series.

The born and bred Australian will attempt to add further accolade to a glittering international career which sees him sitting on 38 AMA Supercross victories.

Reed is determined to wrestle back the champion’s trophy which he has held twice before in 2004 and most recently in 2008.

“It’s been a hectic few months but I am really enjoying it all, everything from joining up with Monster and Kawasaki last year, to winning another Super X title and then joining the team back here (in the US) for pre-season testing,” said Reed.

“I feel like I’m fitting in really well with the team, there is such a positive attitude here and everyone has been great. To have Ryan (Villopoto) as a teammate is exciting, as a young rider he has lots of potential and as a team we bring a lot to the table.

“The bike feels very good and we’re confident that it will be ready to challenge for wins straight up.

“I’m really enjoying racing at the moment, I feel like my form and fitness is good and importantly I’m having a lot of fun out there which makes a big difference.

“A1 will be a good form guide for the rest of the season and I’m looking to open well by challenging for a win.”

The 27-year-old has won on 7 occasions at Anaheim, including his first AMA Supercross win in 2003.

Anaheim 1 marks the start of an intense four-month schedule which features races on almost every consecutive weekend. The season concludes in Las Vegas on the 8th of May.
